Hurricane Katrina: Tragedy, Displacement, and Resilience

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina became one of the deadliest and most destructive natural disasters in American history. After the storm struck the Gulf Coast, catastrophic levee failures left approximately 80% of New Orleans underwater. More than 1,800 people lost their lives, hundreds of thousands were displaced, and property damage exceeded $125 billion.

As residents fled the flooded city, communities across the country opened their doors. Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and numerous other cities welcomed tens of thousands of evacuees seeking shelter, safety, and a chance to rebuild their lives. The images from Katrina revealed both the devastating human cost of the disaster and the extraordinary challenges faced by those forced to leave everything behind.

Yet Katrina is also a story of resilience. The people of New Orleans endured unimaginable loss but refused to let their city disappear. Families rebuilt homes, neighborhoods came back to life, and the city’s rich culture, music, traditions, and spirit endured. This exhibit documents not only the destruction left in Katrina’s wake, but also the strength, determination, and hope of the people who fought to reclaim their city and their future.
